The White Paper, ‘A People Driven Approach; Delivering NHS Homes’, authored by the NHS Homes Alliance, launches today.

Housing is a critical part of the current NHS staffing crisis and surplus National Health Service land should be used to deliver homes for health and social care workers to support staff retention and recruitment.

Authored by the NHS Homes Alliance, of which Global City Futures is a founding member. This is a collaboration of representatives from public and private sector organisations including NHS Trusts, pension funds, financial, legal and real estate experts; housing associations; architects and developers. The White Paper sets out a vision for using the NHS estate to build affordable, high-quality, and sustainable homes near to hospitals and clinics, so boosting NHS and social care staff retention and recruitment, ultimately improving the quality of care and providing better services for all.

The White Paper recommends that developments are built based on the specific recruitment and staff retention needs of local health and social care services, according to NHS Trusts and ICBs, and provide different types of homes that work for the required staff at all levels of primary, secondary and social care; from junior doctors, nurses and social care workers, to porters and cleaners.

The White Paper contains the “NHS: New Homes Solution” the proposed financial structure developed by Global City Futures.

A new joint ministerial taskforce has been announced in response to NHS Homes Alliance White Paper

Lord Markham CBE, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Health and Social Care, says:

“I welcome the paper from the NHS Homes Alliance which highlights several recommendations to address the issues that have so far prevented the NHS delivering key worker accommodation at the scale and pace that is required. I will lead a joint taskforce with the housing minister, Rachel Maclean to work through the barriers identified and support the NHS to streamline delivery of this much needed accommodation to support its vital and valuable workforce.”

Roli Martin, Managing Director at Global City Futures and lead on Finance and Professional Services is one of the driving forces behind the NHS Homes Alliance. Download the White Paper below that contains the “NHS: New Homes Solution” the proposed financial structure developed by Global City Futures.

Global City Futures have been invited to contribute their financial modelling expertise to a White Paper bringing a way forward for new NHS Key Worker Homes

A range of stakeholders have come together in the commercial sector to submit a White Paper to be considered by the government that can solve the problem of housing for NHS staff.

Currently, the number one reason for staff leaving the NHS is the lack of quality and affordable homes. Global City Futures have worked with a number of NHS Trusts and have developed an innovative financial model that can provide new, sustainable housing for the sector, and it is ready to be adapted and scaled for other trusts across England.

Along with other invited stakeholders, Global City Futures will support development of the White Paper to produce a national framework. This will include finance providers, developers and operators to facilitate delivery of 25,000 sustainable, affordable key worker homes by NHS Trusts and their partners on NHS sites.

Roli Martin, Managing Director of Global City Futures said “While working with the Royal Devon NHS Trust, our experienced financial team developed a completely compliant, ‘off the books’ solution to funding new housing. Global City Futures are already making this model free to use for all NHS Trusts. With sustainability built in, and the Trusts in full control, we believe thousands of new homes can be delivered across NHS England sites, easing pressure on staff shortages.”

See below for the case study of our work with the Royal Devon NHS Trust.
